Two years ago, I had a life-changing conversation with a special friend.

"I’m following Jewish laws, praying—everything. So why do I still feel empty and angry and resentful of god"

That question struck me deeply. Although I had been surrounded by Jews my whole life, my understanding of "teshuva" was clouded by my upbringing in the United States and a skewed perspective reminiscent of Catholic confession and repentance.

I had been stuck in a cycle of promising to be better, quietly resenting the rules, and believing that God was out to get me—just waiting for me to slip up and punish me. Every setback felt like divine retribution for not being good enough or strict enough.

I realized I had no idea what it meant to be close to God or to return to Him because I didn’t feel I had ever really been there.

This revelation led my friend and me to embark on an intense chavrusa exploration of coming closer to Hashem through the teachings of Rav Kook. We discovered a profound wellspring of love and wisdom in investing in our connection to our source.

This journey revealed how we can fill our lives with meaning and light by connecting our souls and bodies, spreading this light to one another.
